Process-oriented observation and documentation as a tool for professionalisation in early childhood education
Keywords:

Based on the bachelor thesis by Fuchs, Holzmann, Huemer and Nöhammer (2023), this article identifies five aspects that form the core of process-oriented observation and documentation concepts. Subsequently, an attempt is made to break down the opportunities for professionalisation that these procedures offer for practice in elementary education. In the course of a research project initiated by the Upper Austrian Board of Education, the current application of observation and documentation in practice was investigated between September and December 2023. Among other things, five guided group discussions were held with early childhood educators (n = 22). The results show, among other things, that professionals in Upper Austria currently lack not only skills but also basic knowledge in relation to observation and documentation work. This emphasises the need for a stronger focus on this area in education, training and continuing professional development.
